Specific admission requirements
A BSc Hons degree in a relevant field of study with a minimum pass rate of 60%.
- If you have a BTech qualification:
you will be considered for admission if you have passed the BTech degree with a minimum of 60%; and - then you will be admitted if you pass the BSc Hons examination in the relevant field of study as a preliminary examination with a minimum mark of 60%.
Application procedure and closing date
Apply online at www.maties.com by 30 September of the previous year. Applications for prospective international students close on 31 August.
Only a limited number of students will be accepted.
Duration of programme
The programme extends over a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years. If you do not complete the programme successfully within four years, you have to obtain special permission from the Postgraduate Programme Committee of the Division of Medical Virology to continue with the programme.
The programme consists of a 100% research component. Students that did not graduate from Stellenbosch University for the previous degrees, will be expected to attend selected lecture blocks and complete selected assignments with the HonsBSc students during the first year of registration.
The initial research proposal is approved by a divisional research committee and the applicable Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences if required. Progress with experimental work is monitored continuously by the supervisor and presented at divisional research meetings.

Programme description
The programme consists of an extensive research project, leading to the submission of a thesis. The subject of the project is determined in close liaison with your supervisor, preferably within the area of expertise of the Division of Medical Microbiology before you will be allowed to register for the programme. The initial research proposal is approved by a departmental research committee and the Health Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Progress with experimental work is monitored continuously by the supervisor. If you are unable to demonstrate satisfactory progress, the Programme Committee may recommend that you discontinue your studies.
